Hearts and Hands Alliance (HHA) is hosting a benefit for Dorothy and Scott Mulholland on Saturday afternoon, October 10.

The Irish Minstrels are joining the many friends and family members in this event to raise needed funds to help with Dorothy’s medical expenses for her cancer treatments.

The party starts at 2 :00, at the Spring Valley Community Center, (200 S. Broadway). A wonderful dinner, served from 4 till 7:30 pm., of delicious BBQed pork, beef brisket, smoked turkey, with beans, salads and dessert, will be prepared by professional pit master Gordon Bly. There will be an auction with gift baskets, a craft sale, bake sale, and quilt raffle tickets for a gorgeous quilt made by Diane Miller.

The Irish Minstrels will be giving a lively and fun musical show for All to enjoy. And there will be other entertainment, too.

The HHA is taking donations for all items for the auction, and the other sales, and bars and cookies for the dinner, and of course, monetary donations. Benefit Celebration for John Whalen

The "John Whalen Benefit" will be a wornderful evening of Family Fun featuring an Indoor Children's Carnival, a bake sale, and many food stands beginning at 4:30 pm. A silent auction of over 50 "Baskets, Buckets, and Boxes" will be held from 4_30 pm until 6:30 pm.

The Fun-loving musical talents of the "Irish Minstrels" with Larry Schmidt on guitar, Melissa Schmidt on mandolin and whistle, Matt Stier on the fiddle, and Brenda Stier on the whistle and and bodhran will fill Wheeler's Bar and Grill with toe-tapping tunes from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm and a live auction will follow at 8:30 pm.

At the end of June, John became a patient at St. Mary's hospital. At first they did not know what was wrong with him but finally we heard his problem referred to as "a spinal stroke" His wife, Ellen, and their children spent a great deal of time at the hospital while also doing their best to keep up with work on the farm.

His brother, Dr. Len Whalen of Zephyrhills, Florida, describes John's situation. "In a nutshell.....I tell people he had tiny benign tumor in his spinal cord that ruptured. A blood vessel in the cord is what was making his right foot and leg go numb and non-responsive. Then when in the hospital, John had a second bleed which made him completely paralyzed from waist down. It was going up the cord until they did surgery and found the problem (as it didn't show up on any of the scans)....that's basically it."

John is presently in a wheelchair. He has a positive attitude and is hopeful eventually he'll be able to walk again. Time will tell.
